Auditing Sensory Research Practices

Challenge

A cosmetic company utilised sensory trained panels for product development. The panelists and panel leaders had been in the company for a long time and processes had not been reviewed or challenged.

Solution

SAM proposed an audit of the company vs industry best practices and existing standards by SAM senior sensory consultants. An extensive review combined an evaluation of existing documents, processes and internal guidelines with live observation of products preparation by technicians, research studies, onsite panel training and notation, and in-home routine sessions.

Outcome

The SAM auditor highlighted good practices that needed to be expanded across all sensory panels. Elements of improvement were identified and enhanced processes recommended to match best-in-class practices.
SAM guided their client towards a more efficient and sustainable way to integrate sensory analysis in their product development and innovation strategy, providing impactful recommendations to structure their development and innovation funnel in a consumer-centric way.
