Hot stuff...measuring the experience of topical pain relief gel

Challenge

To understand the sensory experience of a prototype pain relief gel and compare to in-market competitors.

Solution

Sensory profiling of the appearance, aroma, texture, skinfeel, warming and cooling properties of the sample set by a SAM trained Sensory Panel. In addition, the intensity of warming and cooling sensations were measured at regular intervals for 60 minutes.

Outcome

The prototype offered several potential benefits over commercial benchmarks: faster absorption and less greasy skinfeel but it was less potent in heat delivery. This triggered consumer research to determine if this level of heat met expectations of the concept.
